DTLA Responds: LA Wildfire Relief and Community Resources

Information to support individuals and businesses during the LA Fire and recovery.


As an organization rooted in the heart of Los Angeles, we recognize the critical need to support relief efforts, our thoughts are with all those affected, and we remain steadfast in our dedication to supporting the recovery of our neighbors and the preservation of our shared home.

Compiled below is an ongoing list of important resources for individuals and businesses impacted by the LA Fires. The situation is rapidly changing, so we encourage you to return back to these resources for the latest information. If you have a resource you would like to include, please let us know.

N95 masks are available at all Los Angeles public libraries as distributed by FEMA including Central Library (630 W 5th St).

Disaster Recovery Centers

The Los Angeles Disaster Recovery Center, at UCLA Research Park (formerly the Westside Pavillion, at Westwood & Pico), provides a range of critical services, including:

  • Short term financial and housing relief for evacuees
  • Documentation recovery such as driver's license replacement, birth certificates, and other essential documents
  • Assistance for businesses and employees impacted by evacuations or damage
  • Federal financial assistance through FEMA and the Small Business Administration
  • Social services such as referrals to disability services, and other public assistance programs
  • Mental and physical health referrals.


An additional Disaster Recovery Center is located in the City of Pasadena at: 3035 E Foothill Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91107.

Free Emergency Childcare

Ketchum-Downtown YMCA is offering free emergency child care for students TK-8th grade who are children of essential workers, first responders, displaced families, and any families in need of care. For more information, email afterschool@ymcala.org.


California State Portal

The State of California created a one-stop portal for essential resources and information you can access immediately including real-time information, signing up for safety alerts, wildfire resources, applying for assistance, and more.


LA County Recovers

Los Angeles County has created LA County Recovers, a website with critical information on recovery assistance, tax relief, and other key programs through the County.


City of Los Angeles

The Emergency Management Department launched a Wildfire Recovery page that outlines support and assistance for those impacted by the fires including individuals and families, property owners, and businesses and workers.

LA Regional Economic Recovery Government Resources

This collective group of regional agencies is working together to streamline the presentation of government resources available to those impacted by the LA Wildfires.

U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA)

While the SBA normally supports businesses, in the times of disaster, they also support homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes, and private nonprofit organizations. Their website includes information on LA Wildfire support including loan programs.

Core loan programs for losses not covered by insurance, all with a 12-month deferral period on interest and payments from dispersal, include:

  • Home Disaster Loans: Loans to homeowners or renters to repair or replace disaster-damaged real estate (up to $500,000) and personal property ($100,000), including automobiles.
  • Business Physical Disaster Loans: Loans (up to $2,000,000) to businesses to repair or replace disaster-damaged property owned by the businesses, including real estate, inventories, supplies, machinery and equipment. Businesses of any size are eligible. Private, non-profit organizations such as charities, churches, private universities, etc., are also eligible.
  • Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL): Working capital loans (up to $2,000,000) to help small businesses, small agricultural cooperatives, small businesses engaged in aquaculture, and most private, non-profit organizations of all sizes meet their ordinary and necessary financial obligations that cannot be met as a direct result of the disaster whether or not they are in the fire zone. These loans are intended to assist through the disaster recovery period.

Applicants are encouraged to apply online for a disaster loan. Please call 800‐659‐2955 or schedule an in-person appointment if you have any questions or need assistance.

Other Federal Government Resources

California Department of Insurance

The Insurance Commissioner will be holding insurance support workshops where there is the opportunity to go over your claim with an insurance expert from the department, connect with your insurance carrier who may be able to issue a payment for some urgent expenses in accordance with your policy, or connect with a counselor to speak to you or your family about your losses.

Things to be aware of:

  • Open a claim as soon as possible.
  • If you don't know who your insurance agent is, The Department of Insurance can help you locate that information - 800-927-4357 or www.insurance.ca.gov.
  • Check with your insurance company to determine if you have the ability to get additional living expenses as part of your homeowner’s insurance or renters’ insurance.
  • Keep records and every receipt for all expenses, whether it's food, lodging, clothing or anything else you need.
  • Do not sign contracts with anyone for repairs or other needs until you have spoken with your insurance company. If anyone is trying to contact you representing your insurance company, demand to see an identification.
  • Keep a log of every conversation that you have with your insurance company, date, time, who you spoke with and what they said
  • Have one place where you keep everything. Consider creating an email address for all your communication and contacts related to your loss.

Public Adjusters:

  • Be aware that you may be approached by public adjusters that do not work for your insurance company. They do represent claimants, but they charge a fee which is normally a percentage of your entire insurance settlement.
  • Company adjusters, employees of the insurance company, and independent adjusters, hired under contract with the insurance company, do not charge a fee to the consumer.
  • Public adjusters cannot solicit for your business for at least seven days following the reopening of a declared disaster area.
  • They are also not allowed to contact you between 6 p.m. and 8 a.m. When you are talking to an insurance adjuster, take note of their phone number, their full name, and license number. Do not rely on a business card. Check with the Department of Insurance to verify they can do business in California.
  • Don’t be pressured into quickly signing any contracts. and that any that anyone who is trying to get you to sign something really quickly or get anything quickly is not doing the work that they're supposed to be. If you do sign a contract, it can be canceled within three business days of signing.
  • It is illegal for a public adjuster to advance money to you as an inducement to sign a contract.
  • Public adjusters may not offer referral fees in excess of $100.
  • Public adjuster may not have an interest in any contractor demolition company or entity making repairs to your property.
  • They may not use a badge as an ID.
