First Fridays: May | Natural History Museum of LA

First Fridays 2023: Fantasy & Fandoms is here! Explore the Museum after hours with live music, DJs, topical discussions, signature cocktails, pop-up experiences, special NHM collections display, and more. This season we focus on how nature & science influence the creation of our favorite imagined worlds. From dragons and witchcraft to superheroes and giant monsters, First Fridays 2023 is where the fans come out to celebrate the intersection of pop-culture fandom and the work and collections of NHM. Cosplay welcome!

May’s theme is Giant Monsters/Giant Robot. This month explores the rise of Asian pop culture and the legacy and work of Giant Robot Magazine. Join the discussion, featuring a panel that includes founders of Giant Robot Magazine, Eric Nakamura and Martin Wong, artist James Jean, filmmaker Dylan Robertson, and acclaimed filmmaker Renee Tajima-Peña, who will also moderate the discussion. Enjoy a special film screening of Artbound/Giant Robot: Asian Pop Culture and Beyond, co-presented by KCET, in the North American Mammal Hall. Groove to outdoor sets by Arushi Jain and DJ ET IV. Say hello to our friends from Alf Museum’s Cosplay for Science Initiative, tabling all night long. Visit the Podcast Corner, featuring Nothing New: A Remake Podcast, a podcast focused on film remakes and how they have evolved over the years.
