Carmina Escobar: Bajo la Sombra del Sol (Under the Sun's Shadow)
On Nov. 18-20, 2021, internationally renowned extreme vocalist and intermedia artist Carmina Escobar will return to REDCAT for the world premiere of her multidisciplinary performative installation piece, Bajo la Sombra del Sol (Under the Sun’s Shadow), a statement on the creation of community, relationship to the environment, and ritual as a fundamental artistic tool to survive in our current historical moment.
Produced by Boss Witch Productions, Bajo la Sombra del Sol conceives of a new myth to explore the relationships between nature and humanity, the self and the collective unconscious. Structured in nine chapters, the performance traverses five sites at Mono Lake, California, during five interventions, from sunrise to sundown. The piece is experienced with an immersive installation that brings the audience on a journey towards its own shadow, including live performances interwoven with film in a multi-screen theatrical environment.
Custom-built instruments by Mexico City-based artist Jerónimo Naranjo and production company Bucareli 69 are portals to another world: a membrane sun drum with string filaments extending into space opens the surreal solar system of the unconscious, where the apocalypse is already happening. Behind this sun, an unknown monster menaces the audience with its own darkness.
