Basquiat & Hip Hop: Exhibition Access, Panel, and After-party
Celebrate Jean-Michel Basquiat and Hip Hop’s 50th Anniversary with an exhibition viewing and panel discussion hosted by Jeanine Heriveaux and Lisane Basquiat, moderated by MSNBC's Ari Melber. Panelists include Rapsody, Yo-Yo and Doug E. Fresh. Guests are also invited to join us for an exclusive after-party featuring Just Blaze.
Music was always a strong influence on Jean-Michel’s paintings – jazz, bebop and hip hop – musical genres that resonated with him and the subject of many of his works. Stylistically, his works often deconstruct and reassemble subjects, similar to the cadence of hip hop. And in his use of language - challenging preconceived ideology - is something that hip hop and Jean-Michel shared.
In 1983 Jean-Michel produced and arranged “Beat-Bop” with K Rob and Rammellzee. Jean-Michel also designed the album cover. It was featured in the movie Wild Style and was ranked by Rolling Stone among the 100 Greatest Hip Hop Songs of all time.
