3rd Annual Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival

Clockshop and California State Parks are hosting the 3rd Annual Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival on May 13, 2– 6pm, at Los Angeles State Historic Park, next to historic Chinatown, Los Angeles.

This family-friendly cultural festival brings together diverse communities in Los Angeles through the art of kites and a day of joyful connection in this important public green space. The all-ages community celebration is free and open to the public honoring the communities surrounding LASHP that fought for and stewarded this public park land, recognizing their resilience, cultural histories, and aspirations. It features kite flying, learning new flying techniques from Kite Masters, a “gallery in the sky,” art-making workshops that explore the natural environment, and a chance to meet local community organizations.

Unique kite designs to be unveiled by this year’s commissioned artist, Misa Chhan. Chhan explores natural dyes and fibers as a medium to engage with and learn from the natural world. Her traditional Japanese kite designs will reference Indigenous knowledge from Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, juxtaposed with Native plants foraged from LA State Historic Park. Also, returning this year is commissioned photographer Stella Kalinina to help tell Angelinos Park Stories, learning what public parks mean to them, and why they're worth protecting.

The 2023 Kite Festival is generously supported by lead High Flyer sponsor, The California Endowment; Anchor sponsors Resources Legacy Fund, Sieroty Company, and the Sierra Club; and Guide Line sponsor American Business Bank.
Additional support comes from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs; lead Clockshop Circle donors, and the generous support of our broader community. Program partners include California State Parks, LA River State Park Partners, the Arts District Community Council, and the LA Parks Alliance.
