Johnna's Perfect Day in DTLA

Johnna's Perfect Day in DTLA

Author: Johnna Hughes

My name is Johnna Hughes, I work at the DTLA Alliance as a resident DTLA expert! I work, live play, and eat, all right here in Downtown. I’ve been here for about ten years now and love all things dining and history, the weirder the better. I’m going to give you a look into my perfect day in DTLA.

1
Start with Coffee at Tilt
334 South Main Street, Kiosk #1
Los Angeles, CA 90013

I usually start my day by grabbing an iced americano from Tilt Coffee Bar, this spot is a little slice of calm in the heart of Downtown. There’s tons of outdoor seating, it’s quiet, and the baristas are incredible. I usually run into a few friends when I’m there because it’s such a community hub. They also have some really good pastries for the days I want a snack.

2
Daily Exercise
835 S Hill St
Los Angeles, CA 90015

A workout is a must, I’m partial to Pilates, especially Lagree 213. They accept drop in classes and they’re a serious challenge.

3
Shopping Around
123 Astronaut ES Onizuka St
Los Angeles, CA 90012

When the weather is nice (and it usually is) I try check out a few of my favorite stores. Kinokuniya at The Bloc is so fun, I usually spend way too much on pens and journaling supplies there, they also have a great Japanese author section.

4
Trinkets & Treasure Hunting
115 Japanese Village Plaza Mall
Los Angeles, CA 90012

If I want trinkets, the Sanrio store in Little Tokyo is my go-to.

5
Wine & Browse
868 S Olive St
Los Angeles, CA 90014

On my way home, I’ll stop at Good Clean Fun to grab a bottle of natural wine from their bottle shop, the owner Ian is the sweetest and has really good recommendations. He always finds the perfect thing for my mood.

6
Browsing books
453 S Spring St
Los Angeles, CA 90013

I also always make a point to go into The Last Bookstore to browse, their used books are so reasonable it blows my mind.

7
Doggy Duty
361 S Broadway
Los Angeles, CA

By this point, my dog is usually ready for her evening walk, I’ll take her up towards City Hall because it gets a bit quieter there in the early evenings and she’s a scaredy cat. If I’m feeling social, I may stop for a quick glass of the wine on the way home at one of my favorite bars in the city, Kippered. This place feels like home away from home, the owners are always there and it’s so cozy it feels like I’m in a small town.

Ordering In
718 S Los Angeles St, Space A
Los Angeles, CA 90014

I’m a bit of a homebody in the evenings these days so I’ll probably order in, my go-tos are Holy Basil for Thai food

9
Pizza Option
330 S Hope St.
Los Angeles, CA 90071

Danny Boy’s is the slice joint of my childhood dreams, reimagined to meet the exacting standards of today's discerning food-loving generation: Classic New York City style pizza, overstuffed hot hero sandwiches, and creative farm-fresh salads that aren’t an afterthought. All made with great ingredients, thoughtfully prepared with passion.

10
Pasta Go-to
111 W 9th St
Los Angeles, CA 90015

Vodka pasta is my go-to. Intimate and warm, they also have a curated selection of natural wines.

11
Going Out
114 E 2nd St.
Los Angeles, CA 90012

If I’m going out, I love sitting at the bar at Redbird.

12
Patio Dining
332 S Broadway
Los Angeles, CA 90013

My other go-to when dining out is the patio at Maccheroni Republic.

13
Nightcap
519 S Spring St
Los Angeles, CA 90013

Again, I’m not usually going to bars much but if I am, The Wolves is a must-see. It’s so gorgeous and feels like stepping into another timeline.
