The 2026/27 season kicks off with MOVEMENT(S)! with Colombian-American conductor and LA Opera’s Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados in a program that is, at its heart, a celebration of dance. Kodály’s Dances of Galánta opens the program with the rhythmic melodies of Hungarian folk tradition, followed by the world premiere of GRAMMY®-nominated composer Carlos Simon’s Afterparty, inspired by the gathering that helped spark the Harlem Renaissance and celebrating 100 years of Black culture. Featuring countertenor John Holiday, the work pulses with groove and communal joy rooted in the rich rhythmic traditions of Black American music.

Gabriela Lena Frank’s Elegía Andina offers a moment of stillness, its singing lines a reminder that dance lives alongside grief as much as celebration. De Falla‘s Three-Cornered Hat, Suite No. 1 closes the evening in a blaze of color, its flamenco rhythms and vivid Spanish characters making an irresistible case that music and movement were never meant to be separated.
