LOMA Film Festival
LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes presents the LOMA Film Festival. The Latinas & Latinos of Mixed Ancestry (LOMA) Film Festival has been created to share the stories of people that embody the intersection of Latinos and non-Latinos. Latino culture was built on the interaction between diverse communities from all over the world. This festival shares how this tradition continues creating a new diverse Latino community. Multiracial Americans has a forty-year track record of creativity and integrity in the mixed-race community. LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes has been a showcase of Latino talent within the cultural heart of Los Angeles. In Hollywood's backyard, this festival presents a unique audience and opportunity for screening your film!

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF LOMA - 12pm to 1pm
This section presents films with a comedic approach to life. Question and answer with filmmakers after the screening.

DIRECTOR SHOWCASE ALESSANDRO GENTILE – 3pm to 4pm
Director Alessandro Gentile is making his second appearance in the LOMA Film Festival and has been a strong supporter of our cause. He has made numerous films of multiple themes and genres and yet still with a distinct style. This showcase will give an intimate look into the craft of filmmaking with a seasoned and successful professional. Come see some of his earlier work as well as sneak peeks at what is to come.

The premiere program of the festival includes an opening event with food vendors, red carpet, and media in attendance. Awards to be presented and question and answer with filmmakers after the screening. The films to be screened are:

Juan Escobedo, a San Diego-born actor, photographer, and filmmaker. His current project, "Las Promotoras Against Violence," funded by the California Arts Council CA Creative Corps Fellowship, documents the inspiring efforts of women in East Los Angeles who support victims of domestic and sexual violence through community work. These resilient women, having overcome their own traumas, volunteer with various nonprofits to educate and empower their communities. The film weaves together interviews, art, animation, and the traditional Oaxacan Dance of el Diablo, symbolizing the eternal balance of good and evil.
For the past two years, Juan has been working on Los Puppy Chulos animation series based his dog’s carboard art he developed during the pandemic. His other work includes a series of public service announcements he scripted into short films with hilarious characters such as Lydia Chlamydia, Gary Gonorrhea and Papi Papilloma that have served as educational films through comedy for youth.
In 2022, Juan’s film Marisol won Best Director, Best Short Film and Best Child Actress at the San Diego Movie Awards Film Festival. Juan’s work was awarded the Arts and Culture Award for Marisol by the East Los Angeles Women’s Center in 2019. In 2018 the film won Best Dramatic Short Film at the Hollywood Independent Film Festival. The script was also acquired by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) Margaret Herrick Library, the main repository of print, graphic and research materials.
