Gene Sperling is the former director of the National Economic Council, serving under U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. His new book, Economic Dignity, written before the COVID-19 outbreak, Sperling advocates that our economic debate confused ends and means. Should economic success be measured by GNP? Or whether the economy is succeeding based on a sense of purpose, fulfillment, and security of its citizens? Now, more than ever, at a moment when many are questioning the very capacity of modern capitalism to avoid accelerating inequality, a hollowed-out middle class, and structural poverty, Sperling says America needs to step back and reflect on its ultimate goals.The conversation will be moderated by Rick Wartzman, a Pulitzer prize winning journalist and current director at the Drucker Institute.

Gene Sperling is also the author of The Pro-Growth Progressive (2005) and What Works in Girls' Education: Evidence for the World's Best Investment (2004, 2015); founded the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution; has been a senior economic advisor on multiple presidential campaigns; and was a consultant on NBC's The West Wing for four seasons.

Rick Wartzman (moderator) is director of the KH Moon Center for a Functioning Society at the Drucker Institute, a part of Claremont Graduate University. Rick is a regular contributor to Fast Company, where his commentary has been recognized by the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing with its Best in Business award. Before joining the Drucker Institute in 2007 as its founding executive director—a position he held for nearly nine years—Rick worked for two decades as a reporter, editor and columnist at The Wall Street Journal and Los Angeles Times. While business editor of The Times, he helped shape a three-part series on Walmart’s impact on the economy and society, which won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting.
