Inside Out & Upside Down: Posters from CalArts 1970–2019
CalArts has a long and rich history of graphic designers producing experimental posters for on-campus visiting artists, exhibitions, music, theater, and dance performances (as well as for REDCAT and Machine Project). This exhibition comprises posters pulled from the CalArts poster archive (posters.calarts.edu), most of which are silkscreen prints produced by designers in a limited run. These posters act as a site of formal and conceptual experimentation, making the posters as much about the agenda of the individual designer as the event they are publicizing. Collectively, these posters track programmatic and pedagogical development in graphic design in Southern California and provide a visual, chronological timeline of CalArts events, performances, agendas, and issues from the last 50 years.
Curated by Michael Worthington with Carmen Amengual, curatorial assistant.
