Its nickname “Mourning” was earned by a slow movement of such beauty that Haydn reportedly requested it be played at his own funeral.

Kayhan Kalhor’s Blue as the Turquoise Night of Neyshabur carries that introspective quality into a different world entirely. Its long, searching lines draw on the classical music of Persia to create something meditative and quietly ravishing. Mozart‘s “Linz” Symphony closes the program with an outpouring of sheer energy and good humor—a work famously written in four days that sounds like it was the most natural thing in the world.
