From Brush to Fabric with Kuniharu Yoshida
Thursday, June 19 & Friday, July 18, 2025
6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Explore the timeless art of shodo, Japanese calligraphy, in this immersive noren-making workshop led by Kuniharu “Kuni” Yoshida, celebrated calligrapher and director of JACCC's Shodo for Little Tokyo program. More than just an introduction to shodo, this session invites you to create your own noren, a traditional Japanese fabric divider typically hung in doorways, windows, or rooms. Norens offer privacy, can signify welcome or separation of space, and serve as functional decor and meaningful cultural keepsakes.
Each year, the Shodo for Little Tokyo program culminates in a special project. This year, 30 hand-painted noren by community seniors will be showcased as a stunning hanging installation at MISE 店 from early June through mid-August. As you brush each character on the fabric amidst the exhibition, you’ll engage deeply with the history, beauty, and everyday relevance of Japanese calligraphy, guided by a master whose teachings reflect decades of practice and community stewardship. Materials are included, and your 27" x 34" handcrafted noren will be yours to take home and display.
Spots are limited for each session. Sign up now to learn from Kuni and bring home a piece of living tradition.
