Clockshop’s Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival Returns May 17

Clockshop’s Community & Unity People’s Kite Festival returns on May 17, 2– 6pm, at Los Angeles State Historic Park, next to historic Chinatown, Los Angeles.

This year’s family-friendly cultural festival’s theme Entangled in Community, marks five years of the People’s Kite Festival at Los Angeles State Historic Park. Featuring kite flying, art-making workshops, live music, food vendors and more. The all-ages community celebration is free and open to the public honoring the communities surrounding Los Angeles State Historic Park that fought for and steward this public park land, recognizing their resilience, cultural histories, and aspirations.

Unique kite designs by this year’s commissioned artist, Maria Maea, designing and creating two unique kites that draw upon the connective threads between Mexican and Samoan cultural traditions, adapting the emblem of the Lau Lupe bird in a woven sculptural form.

New this year, artist Sterling Wells will be painting the kite festival, live as it happens. For the second year in a row, a kite competition will take place, inviting attendees to compete for the best handmade kite, judged by kite masters.

Clockshop encourages attendees to make their own kites or visit its website for suggestions on where to purchase eco-friendly kites ahead of the event. Additionally, a Kite-Making Station with a limited number of donation-based kites will be available for attendees to assemble, decorate, and fly on a first-come, first-served basis.
