Across Borders is a two-day cultural and musical celebration that unites the sacred depth of ancient Indian classical traditions with the vibrant energy of American jazz fusion. Curated by acclaimed guitarist and composer Shallum Xavier(Fuzon) this event offers a rich blend of traditional dance, soulful instrumentation, and cross-cultural collaboration.
Day One: Fusion of Tradition & Tribute
Start Time: 4:00 PM
Opening Act (25 min): Classical Bharatanatyam dance performance accompanied by guitar and sitar in the Dorian mode.
Follow-Up Set (25 min): Guitar and sitar jam with tabla and drums, covering iconic international tunes.
Tribute Performance (1 hr 30 min): Shallum Xavier and ensemble pay homage to legends from the subcontinent — including Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mehdi Hassan, and Lata Mangeshkar — blending their timeless melodies with elements of jazz fusion.
Day Two: Rhythm, Roots & Resonance
Start Time: 4:00 PM
Opening Set (25 min): Percussion circle featuring tablas, dholaks, frame drums, and throat singing, incorporating Indigenous American rhythms.
Traditional Performance (25 min): Inuit-inspired music and dance interwoven with Indian classical influences.
Mid-Set: Sitar recital transitions into an American jazz set led by the Ari Roland Jazz Quartet, fused with Indian classical elements and global instruments.
Closing Set (1 hr 30 min): A powerful collaboration between sitar, tabla, and the jazz quartet — blending Indian ragas with bluesy improvisation and modern fusion.
Day Three (Optional Add-On or Future Expansion):
Spotlighting emerging South Asian artists, singers, and fusion groups performing original works and reinterpretations — a youthful and fresh celebration of cross-cultural music.
